HIV/AIDS raises many communication challenges as it touches on all aspects of life. Issues range from personal identity and sexuality to understanding of morality and disease to the social problems of stigma and discrimination. The pandemic has also seen courageous and creative responses from people living with HIV/AIDS, and those living with its social impact. So it's no accident that the communication approaches and thinking that have been developed to tackle HIV/AIDS hold lessons for us all.

This framework, the product of a participatory research project on the use of communications for HIV prevention, finds conventional communications that focus on behaviour change limited in their scope and effectiveness. It questions the relationship between knowledge and behaviour, and the stress in ‘behaviour change’ communication on individual change. For sustainable change, the influence of a number of domains of social context need to be addressed, including: political and policy frameworks, gender, socio-economic status, spirituality and religion, and culture. It builds on these domains to create broad regional strategies for communications in Asia, Africa and Latin America and the Caribbean. Its suggestions for future national strategies combine interpersonal communication and mass media in key areas of HIV/AIDS prevention and care. It stipulates that participatory processes are central to designing and operationalising national strategies

This toolkit aims to share the learning on national partnership programmes (NPP) so far, The examples, case studies, challenges and processes described are therefore a ‘work-in-progress’ rather than perfectly presented material. The toolkit also provides examples of successful initiatives using the NPP approach. A NPP is based on the principle that information is power, providing tools for information sharing, networking and dialogue. This paper puts forward an argument in favour of careful and critical analysis of culture in formulating communication strategies with and for specific groups, based on experience drawn from the Clown Project in Guatemala and other countries in Central America. The Clown Project uses labour-intensive face-to-face street theatre and dialogue, participatory workshops, and symbolic communication such as print-based material to reach those most vulnerable to the spread and impact of HIV and AIDS . The analysis takes into account relations of power within and between vulnerable groups, examining the centre-periphery dynamic between classes, genders, ethnicities, age groups, and other social identities. Both appropriately supported insider perspectives and appropriately processed outsider knowledge are recommended, along with ways of bridging science and the field, theory and practice

This website has health and development stories from Key Correspondents (KC) as well as tips about writing and posting stories. The KC Team is a vibrant network of more than 250 citizen journalists, from all walks of life, based in over 50 countries. They write about health and development issues affecting them and their communities and in doing so, ‘speak their world’. A large number are people living with HIV, TB or other health conditions. Together they help document local realities and give a voice to the voiceless.
