Growing Together. Child participation through the project journey. Management of a children’s club by the children themselves

An overview is presented of a project in Bangladesh, Pakistan and Thailand to:

  • To support communities in raising socially and emotionally healthy kids in refugee/IDPs camps and in host communities.
  • To create opportunities for children with disabilities and other vulnerable children (0-12 years old) including children at risk of developmental delays/psychological distress in displacement contexts, to learn and develop safely while having fun.
  • Using “play” as key driver to learn and develop safely children’s potential while having fun.

The project was implemented using:

  • Existing HI tools (Personalized Social Support, Adapted Physical Activity, etc.)
  • Tools piloted in IKEA project (Blue Box, low-cost toy making, inclusive playgrounds, Ideas box)
  • Environmental Footprint Assessment across 3 project sites

Monitoring & evaluation was carried out using techniques including

  • Scopeo (Sc-ore O-f Pe-rceived O-utcomes) Kids
  • Participatory M&E approaches (digital story telling, child-child video interview etc)

"Violence against women by an intimate partner is a major contributor to the ill-health of women. This study analyses data from 10 countries and sheds new light on the prevalence of violence against women in countries where few data were previously available. It also uncovers the forms and patterns of this violence across different countries and cultures, documenting the consequences of violence for women’s health. This information has important implications for prevention, care and mitigation... The high rates documented by the Study of sexual abuse experienced by girls and women are of great concern, especially in light of the HIV epidemic. Greater public awareness of this problem is needed and a strong public health response that focuses on preventing such violence from occurring in the first place...This study will help national authorities to design policies and programmes that begin to deal with the problem"

Critical thinking is considered to be part of the holistic development of young children as it is a key ability for children to guide their way through dilemmas, decisions and choices they make in life. This issue includes a review of strategies and teaching methods, and a discussion of the extent to which the youngest children can be considered capable of critical thinking. Fostering critical thinking as an aim of education is then argued for, using the instruments that have been developed to support the implementation of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. The concept of ‘Philosophy for Children’ is examined followed by an exploration of a programmed centred on philosophy for children in Iceland. A programme in the Andes in Argentina looks at the links between philosophy for children and resilience. The Insights From the Field section features the work of Mobile Creches Projects and of the links between critical thinking skills and HIV/AIDS in Mozambique
