Limited attention has been given to helping educators to deal with the new challenges posed by the epidemic. Even less attention has been given to protecting educators from HIV infection and to providing care, treatment and support for educators infected with or affected by HIV and AIDS. There are also very few programmes addressing the needs of other education sector personnel, such as planners, managers and support staff. This booklet looks at educator development and support; educator conduct; and prevention, care, treatment and support of infected and affected eduators
The activities in the manual will strengthen teachers' understanding of sexuality, gender, sexual and reproductive health and HIV and AIDS as well as the self-awareness, values and skills that play an effective role in HIV prevention, care and mitigation in their schools and the community. This includes providing supportive, positive role-models, creating a safe environment, reducing stigma and discrimination and teaching sexuality and life skills effectively
The is the report of a national training in leadership skills. It was part of a project focusing on empowering women with disabilities in south Asia. The training aimed to develop their understanding of the concept of leadership and strengthen their skills at an individual, a group and an organisational level to enable them to advocate more effectively for the rights of women with disabilities
This training of trainers brought together 23 participants from nine countries - Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, of which the majority were disabled women. It accompanies a training manual to help facilitate cascade training at a national level and through other disabled women's organisations not invovled in the original project

This paper presents the knowledge, attitudes and practices of West Africa Water Initiative partners in issues of disability and accessibility in WATSAN services and programs. The main findings were that partners were aware of the disadvantages and lacked experience and technical skills in dealing with issues of people with disabilities. They recognised that WATSAN facilities were often difficult to access. Practical ideas and suggestions are provided to address these problems. The information from this study also helped in the designing of a training workshop for West Africa Water Initiative (WAWI) partners and people with disabilities in some of these practical approaches

These guidelines and 22 recommendations are designed to support for countries that face a high HIV burden and acute shortages within the health workforce. Task shifting involves the rational redistribution of tasks among health workforce teams. Specific tasks are moved, where appropriate, from highly qualified health workers to health workers with shorter training and fewer qualifications in order to make more efficient use of the available human resources for health. The key elements that must be in place if the approach is to prove safe, efficient, effective, equitable and sustainable, cover the need for consultation, situation analysis and national endorsement, and for an enabling regulatory framework. They specify the quality assurance mechanisms, including standardised training, supportive supervision, and certification and assessment, that will be important to ensure quality of care

This guide is intended as a resource to help nongovernmental organisation (NGO) staff and HIV service providers working across the spectrum of HIV prevention, treatment, care and support services to take steps towards integrating HIV prevention for, by and with people living with HIV. It is hoped it will also be of use both to individual people living with HIV and to their partners. The guide does not intend to discuss or review all HIV prevention strategies. Rather, it is a starting point from which to consider different strategies to assist NGO staff and HIV service provider organisations to support HIV positive people to live well with HIV and have safer sexual relationships within a full and healthy life. This report of a study completed by the ILO in Malawi, South Africa and Zambia, examines access for persons with disabilities to acquire training and obtain employment. The study finds that if given opportunities to learn new skills, persons with disabilities are equally as likely to contribute to society and the overall economy as non-disabled persons. Recommendations are provided for government and non-government organisations. This report would be useful for governments, NGOs and practitioners interested in strategies for skills acquisition and work for persons with disabilities in southern Africa

IYWG is a network of 10 NGOs, donors and cooperating agencies. The website is supported by the US Agency for International Development and the content is overseen by Family Health International
This statement from the Council on Health Research for Development considers the responsibility of research programmes carried out in low to middle income countries to build the capacity of a country’s researchers and the national research system, in the process of achieving its own research goals. It sets out 4 problems that need to be addressed: health research needed by developing countries is mostly conducted for them, sometimes with them, but rarely by them; health research in developing countries is problem-specific - or ‘vertical’ and does not usually contribute to building the national system for health research; the questions addressed by health research in developing countries are largely determined by the international community - specifically those funding ‘global health research’; and health research is not seen as a key driver of development in low income countries - which constitutes a missed opportunity towards real and sustainable progress.
