Limited attention has been given to helping educators to deal with the new challenges posed by the epidemic. Even less attention has been given to protecting educators from HIV infection and to providing care, treatment and support for educators infected with or affected by HIV and AIDS. There are also very few programmes addressing the needs of other education sector personnel, such as planners, managers and support staff. Peer education plays a key role in the prevention of HIV, being a very effective tool in settings and among groups that professional practitioners are not able or do not have the resources to reach. It entails carrying out informal or structured educational activities with individuals or groups of peers, over a period of time. This manual is designed to help potential peer educators to develop the necessary qualities, skills and knowledge. The manual consists of 28 sessions, to be covered in six days but which can be easily adapted for different training needs. Provides a comprehensive overview of the HIV/AIDS peer educator profile, including qualities and responsibilities involved, medical information on HIV and AIDS, prevention, counselling and testing. Includes a resource pack with participatory tool cards for interpersonal communication and facilitating behavioural change

Undergraduate medical and pharmacy education : the need for change and the way forward

This is a report of the Second International Consultation on Undergraduate Medical and Pharmacy Education, convened by Health Action International Asia Pacific (HAIAP) in collaboration with the South East Asia Regional Office (SEARO) and the Eastern Mediterranean Regional Office (EMRO) of the World Health Organization (WHO). It attempts to identify the shortfalls of medical and pharmacy education in the context of developing countries, indigenous cultures and changing expectations and demands on the profession. The consultation produced a series of recommendations, including introducing social, economic and ethical concepts in medical education and making access to information resources more available to pharmacy students and pharmacists

Strategic issues in preventing cataract blindness in developing countries

Cataract blindness is a public health problem of major proportions in developing countries. Intracapsular cataract extraction with aphakic spectacles has been the standard surgical technique for restoring sight. Because of image magnification in the operated eye, however, the result in unilaterally blind patients is less than satisfactory. Fortunately, with the availability of low-cost intraocular lenses ( IOL) and ophthalmologists trained in extracapsular surgery, it is now practical to intervene successfully in the unilateral case. The need for increased attention on the quality of the visual outcome is only one of three important strategic issues in cataract blindness control. The existing high prevalence of cataract blindness in developing countries and an increasing cataract incidence due to an aging population require substantial increases in surgical volume. The third issue relates to cost. If significant increases in surgical volume and quality of outcomes are to be realised without an increased need for external funding, service delivery must be made more efficient. The expansion of IOL surgery for unilateral blindness is a favourable trend in ensuring financial sustainability of delivery systems; patients can be operated on while still economically productive and able to pay rather than waiting for bilateral blindness and a less favourable economic and social impact. It the quality, volume, and cost issues are to be successfully addressed, operational and structural changes to eye care delivery systems are necessary. These changes can be effected through training, technology introduction, management of facilities, social marketing, organizational partnerships, and evaluation. With improved understanding of the critical factors in successful models their widespread replication will be facilitated.
