Non-formal education and livelihood skills for marginalized street and slum youth in Uganda

This report summarises a programme for marginalised youth that was implemented in one urban area (Kampala) and one rural area (Arua) of Uganda, with the ultimate goal of determining marketable livelihood skills while facilitating placement of marginalised youth in employment. By providing marginalised youth with new learning opportunities that nurture empowerment and socio-economic inclusion, the project contributed to breaking the cycle of marginalisation and vulnerabilities that impedes the development of out-of-schools youth. In this context, education on HIV and AIDS was an integral part of the project, which also involved the active participation of local artisans and employers during specific training and orientation sessions. 288 marginalised youth were placed in viable working situations. The process was effective in building self-esteem, equipping them to make informed decisions and resist negative peer pressure. Training methods revolved around three basic approaches: - learning by doing; - learning by producing, and - learning by earning

Peer education plays a key role in the prevention of HIV, being a very effective tool in settings and among groups that professional practitioners are not able or do not have the resources to reach. It entails carrying out informal or structured educational activities with individuals or groups of peers, over a period of time. This manual is designed to help potential peer educators to develop the necessary qualities, skills and knowledge. The manual consists of 28 sessions, to be covered in six days but which can be easily adapted for different training needs. A review is presented of the performance of health-workers In low and middle income countries and of strategies for improving their performances. An overview of issues and evidence about the determinants of performance is given. Health-worker practices are complex behaviours that have many potential influences. Reviews of intervention studies in low and middle income countries suggest that the simple dissemination of written guidelines is often ineffective, that supervision and audit with feedback is generally effective, and that multifaceted interventions might be more effective than single interventions. It is reported that few interventions have been evaluated with rigorous cost-effectiveness trials.

This article presents a historical overview of Chinese attitudes to children's play activities. While Confucian and neo-Confucian scholars based their pedagogical teaching on an idealised image of childhood and showed a hostile attitude to play, games and toys, traditional China accepted children's right to play. Furthermore, a dualism between play activities and daily life activities was alien to Chinese traditional society, and games were rather understood as interwoven into daily life in many ways. This paper can be particularly useful to researchers and practitioners keen on exploring the cultural foundations of childhood and children's education in contemporary China

This article summarises a forum of health professionals that was held in Brisbane in 2003 to discuss the potential for CBR approaches to be used in remote, rural and indigenous communities regions in Australia. The forum identified principles and guidelines for the development of CBR and recognised that CBR has yet to make a significant impact on the service system in Australia. Forum members noted its potential, and called for recognition of the need for greater community involvement in disability services, the need to develop appropriate training frameworks, and the need to redirect resources to such community models.
