Social determinants of health : the role of social protection in addressing social inequalities in health

This paper aims to provide focused insights into specific aspects of the international debate on social protection. The author highlights that "the social, economic and political context in which people grow, live, work and age has enormous impact on their health status. These wider structural determinants of health lie largely outside the health sector. The level and coverage of social protection systems is one key determinant. Social protection measures and mechanisms directly contribute to poverty reduction and human resource development by providing recipients with in-kind or cash transfers. They also allow beneficiaries to gain better access to social services, including health facilities, drugs, etc"

Child context relationships and developmental outcomes : some perspectives on poverty and culture

In 2002 the Christian Children's Fund commissioned a comprehensive study on the experience and the impact of poverty on children. The results were published in a series of five working papers and are aimed at community organisations working on breaking multigenerational poverty. This working paper points out that programmes must be sensitive to the several contexts that simultaneously influence the child's development -- the ecology the child is in, the developmental period, and the social, cognitive, emotional and physical domain. Cultural practices form a central component of a child's context. The second half of the paper explores the ways in which cultures structure the experience of childhood. It stresses that cultural practices and local knowledge are integral in all developmental contexts. The paper focuses on children of all ages, but is aware of the different needs of the child at the different developmental stages, as outlined on page 12. The paper takes a very general worldwide geographical viewpoint, which contributes to some useful overall theories, discussion points and conclusions that can be applied to a variety of programmes around the world

This report aims to explore present thinking and experience on childhood and children, and to identify the most constructive future directions for policy. The report is based on concepts and theories from social anthropology, developmental psychology, sociology, demographics, economics and history and attempts to bridge the gap between these fields and policy making. The report maintains that childhood is best understood as a culturally and situationally diverse social construction. The variations in the way that children are perceived and treated reflect cultural differences in priorities in child development and beliefs pertaining to childhood and account for major differences in both children's social and economic roles and child development outcomes. This report focuses on children all over the world and on children of all ages. Although there are also references to children under the age of 8 throughout the report, section 3 (p.23) on the diversity of childhood focuses most on the early childhood years
