Expand view

This publication contains an overview of the common themes and funding resulting from five country reports, and the five reports themselves. The World Health Organization has designated all five as TB-high burden countries. The research findings show a low level of awareness about TB, and TB and HIV co-infection; about how TB is transmitted and how it can be cured; and about the link between poverty and TB; as well as low media coverage of TB and a lack of strong communication strategies for national TB programmes. It also contains country-specific recommendations

UN Millennium Project 2005 : who's got the power? Transforming health systems for women and children. Task Force on Child Health and Maternal Health

FREEDMAN, Lynn P
et al
2005

Expand view

This report has been produced by the Task Force on Child Health and Maternal Health. It identifies technical interventions needed to address the problems of high rates of maternal mortality, continued child deaths due to preventable illnesses, unmet need for sexual and reproductive health services, and weak and fragile health systems. The report also asserts that policymakers must act now to change the fundamental societal dynamics that currently prevent those most in need from accessing quality health care

HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria : the status and impact of the three diseases

GLOBAL FUND TO FIGHT AIDS, TUBERCOLOSIS AND MALARIA
2005

Expand view

This is a publication produced by the Global Fund in collaboration with the Roll Back Malaria, Stop TB and HIV Departments of the World Health Organization, and UNAIDS. It looks at the human and economic impact of three major infectious diseases, HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria, and identifies a reciprocal cause-effect relationship between poverty and disease. In resource-constraint countries, this has a devastating impact on the health systems, and on the most vulnerable sections of society, namely women and children. The document calls for sustained commitment and funding on the part of the government, the private sector and NGOs

Childcare and early childhood development programmes and policies : their relationship to eradicating child poverty

PENN, Helen
June 2004

Expand view

The paper explores paradigms, arguments and evidence on which international agencies draw in discussing early childhood development (ECD). These include assumptions about poverty and the role of ECD in reducing poverty, assumptions about ‘the robustness’ of ECD and the contexts in which ECD takes place. Two case studies, one from Swaziland and one from Kazakhstan are used to explore strengths and limitations. The paper concludes that almost all the evidence for the effectiveness of ECD in determining cognitive, social and economic outcomes is drawn either directly from the North, particularly from the USA, or relies on assumptions drawn from work carried out in the North as a basis for recommendations in the South. The paper points out that ECD may be a useful form of practical relief to mitigate childhood poverty in particular circumstances and this could include children affected by HIV/AIDS. There is a section on page 35 on early childhood development and HIV/AIDs. Other vulnerable children are noted as those with time poor mothers and those in situations of war and conflict

World youth report 2003 : the global situation of young people

2004

Expand view

Overall, young people today are better off than previous generations, but many are still severely hindered by a lack of education, poverty, health risks, unemployment and the impact of conflict. The World Youth Report 2003 provides an overview of the global situation of young people. The first ten chapters focus on the priority areas of education, employment, extreme poverty, health issues, the environment, drugs, delinquency, leisure time, the situation of girls and young women, and youth participation in decision-making as identified by the World Programme of Action for Youth (WPAY) adopted by the General Assembly in 1995. The remaining five chapters address some of the newer issues that were later identified as additional priorities for youth and were adopted by the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) in 2003

State of the world's children 2005 : childhood under threat

UNITED NATIONS CHILDREN'S FUND (UNICEF)
2004

Expand view

The latest UNICEF report concentrates on the theme of the quality of a child’s life. There have been significant advances in the fulfillment of children’s rights to survival, health and education through the provision of essential goods and services, and a growing recognition of the need to create a protective environment to shield children from exploitation, abuse and violence since the Convention on the Rights of the Child was adopted by the UN General Assembly in 1989. Worryingly, however, in several regions and countries some of these gains appear in danger of reversal from three key threats: poverty, armed conflict and HIV/AIDS. The rights of over 1 billion children are violated because they are severely underserved of at least one or more of the basic goods and services required to survive, grow and develop. Swift and decisive action is required to reduce the poverty that children experience, protect them from armed conflict and support those orphaned or made vulnerable by HIV/AIDS

Child health research : a foundation for improving child health

DABIS, François
et al
2002

Expand view

This report discusses the role of medical research in child health improvement, highlighting how new knowledge has lead to action and action, in turn, to research. Research findings have contributed to reduce child morbidity and mortality by leading to significant achievements in diarrhoea management, breastfeeding promotion, prevention of mother-to-child transmission and remedying vitamin A deficiency. However, research and information systems need now to address four crucial causes of child poor health: low birth weight, nutrition, environmental factors and poverty. Research findings about these crucial risk factors should inform public health programmes and help identify feasible goals. The report calls for more investments to broaden the research capacity of resource-constrained countries to ensure health policies are responsive to local needs
