Provides details of over 20,000 materials on international health and disability issues, including books, manuals, reports, posters, videos and CD-ROMs. Many of the materials are unpublished literature produced in developing countries, and much is not recorded in other databases. Details of resources include subjects, keywords, price, publisher and distributor. This database references the Source collection which has been developed from the merger of the resource centres of Healthlink Worldwide and the Centre for International Child Health, and in partnership with Handicap International, UK and Exchange, to produce Source, an international information support centre, which aims to support health and disability activities worldwide

Challenges and concerns

This article follows on from several case studies presented on the Reproductive Health Outlook website. It draws together key issues based on a review of recent literature and project experiences. The main themes are around the significant financial, political, cultural and technological obstacles that affect the establishment of sustainable programmes, especially for computer-based ICTs. These obstacles have been identified as lack of affordability, lack of human capacity, lack of awareness of the benefits of ICT, lack of ability to use ICT proficiently, and lack of content suitable for local residents. ICTs that rely on access to the Internet need good-quality access to be truly useful

The World Bank and disability

The World Bank's disability website provides links to information about its disability related activities. It includes online documents produced by the World Bank and other key international agencies, classified under a range of topics including education, community-based rehabilitation, disability and conflict, disability and HIV/AIDS, gender, rural development, etc. It contains links to related websites, including UNESCO's inclusive education programme, the World Health Organization's social change and mental health programme.

The web-based search engine allows users to search for materials in either electronic form or access a summary of materials unavailable electronically. CHAIN is currently expanding its online, searchable Chinese database which will allow individuals from all sectors of Chinese society to search and access CHAIN's extensive online database and download materials, or order them from the CHAIN resource centre online

HIV i-Base : HIV treatment information for healthcare professionals and HIV-positive people

This is an an easy to understand, non-technical website providing information about anti-retroviral treatment for AIDS for health care professionals and HIV positive people. There are clear guides to combination therapy, changing treatment, managing side effects and women's health. There is a regular HIV treatment bulletin that gives a technical review of latest treatment research and trials and news relating to clinical management of HIV. It also provides information on education and training on meetings, materials, specialist training and networks for HIV positive people and community advocates in the UK and abroad. HIV i-Base is an HIV-positive led activist group

Treatment Action Campaign (TAC)

The Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) has since 1998 been campaigning for greater access to HIV treatment for all South Africans, by raising public awareness and understanding about issues surrounding the availability, affordability and use of HIV treatments. It campaigns for equitable access to affordable treatment for all people with HIV/AIDS and supports the prevention and elimination of all new HIV infections. It promotes and sponsors legislation to ensure equal access to social services for and equal treatment of all people with HIV/AIDS. It challenges by means of litigation, lobbying, advocacy and all forms of legitimate social mobilisation, against any barrier or obstacle, including unfair discrimination that limits access to treatment for HIV/AIDS in the private and public sector. It educates, promotes and develops an understanding and commitment within all communities of developments in HIV/AIDS treatment. It campaigns for access to affordable and quality health care for all people in South Africa. It trains and develops a representative and effective leadership of people living with HIV/AIDS on the basis of equality and non-discrimination irrespective of race, gender, sexual orientation, disability, religion, sex, socio-economic status, nationality, marital status or any other ground. It campaigns for an effective regional and global network comprising of organisations with similar aims and objectives

The Alaskan AIDS Assistance Association

National Rehabilitation Information Centre (NARIC)

Hosts three databases that can be searched by subject. These are: the NARIC Knowledgebase containing 2800 organisations, agencies, publications and internet resources; REHABDATA an extensive database of disability and rehabilitation literature abstracts spanning more than 50 years of research; and the NIDRR program directory listing 400 disability and rehabilitation research projects across the US. Visitors can search each database by author, keywords, publisher or year of publication, or can browse through pre-selected material on key topics. Although of the literature referenced originates in the USA, the topic 'International Rehabilitation' is a good starting point to identify journal articles and reports relevant to the developing country context. Full text documents are not available, though NARIC does offer a document retrieval service for certain journal articles referenced in REHABDATA. The cost for this service is US$0.05 per page for copying plus shipping and handling
