Global Disability Summit - commitments

A major outcome of the Global Disability Summit, July 2018, was the commitments of a large number of organisations to achieve the rights of people with disabilities in developing countires.

The commitments of each organisation are provided in the same format and are categorised by summit theme:

  1. Dignity and respect for all
  2. Inclusive Education
  3. Economic Empowerment
  4. Harnessing Technology and Innovation

Organisations making commitments are grouped in the following categories:

  • National Governments
  • Multilateral organisations
  • Private Sector organisations

Resource book on Disability Inclusion

This is a resource book on disability inclusive practices. Within this book a variety of resources has been brought together that are relevant for disability inclusion. This is of particular interest for persons working in (development) organisations who would like to ensure that their projects and programmes are inclusive of persons with disabilities.

The book relies heavily on the experiences and practices of inclusion developed by different organisations to which the authors are indebted, and they have tried to make reference to the sources wherever possible. In addition, they have drawn on their experiences as programme managers and disability inclusion advisors.

These materials may be used for non-commercial purposes, with proper references to all authors and sources involved. Should you use this resource book in your training or other work, please let us know via lab@light-for-the-world.org.

The objective of Australia’s work in disability-inclusive development is to improve the quality of life of people with disabilities in developing countries by enhancing participation and empowerment of people with disabilities, reducing poverty among people with disabilities and improving equality for people with disabilities in all areas of public life. This strategy document “provides guidance for DFAT’s strategic decision making by articulating key opportunities for strengthening disability-inclusive development where DFAT can make the most difference—addressing the key challenges of disability-inclusive development in the Indo-Pacific, using Australia’s expertise, and aligning our efforts with the priorities of Australia’s aid program. For external stakeholders, this strategy is a non-binding public articulation of the Australian Government’s continued commitment to disability-inclusive development and highlights our approach, principles and priorities”

Mainstreaming of disability and HIV/AIDS : a double challenge

This paper describes how organisations take into account, or mainstream, disability and/or HIV and AIDS in their work. In the introduction, guest writer Nora Groce discusses the link between disability and HIV/AIDS and the similarities between the issues. The next chapters examine different forms of mainstreaming, and then discuss the arguments for and against mainstreaming disability and/or HIV/AIDS. Chapter 3 deals with the basic principles of the mainstreaming process. Chapter 4 discusses the integration of the disability and/or HIV/AIDS factor in development activities. This includes activities of and with partners in the South, ie socio-economic projects, awareness raising and training activities in the South. It discusses how mainstreaming implicates the representation and participation of persons with a disability and/or living with HIV or AIDS, and the relevant interest organisations representing both groups, in the initial phases of the project as well in implementation. Chapter 5 deals with mainstreaming in organisational policy. There is a need for Northern NGOs as well as Southern partners to actively adapt their policy to take into account disability and/or HIV/AIDS. Both themes should be integrated into the whole organisational structure, and taken into account when setting up activities and in workplace policy

This toolbox provides information, strategies and resources for development organisations to become more inclusive in their hiring practices, administration and policies. It focuses on practical tips and resources for organisations seeking to become more inclusive at headquarter offices and though organisational policies. Although it was designed for US-based agencies and refers to the Americans with Disabilities Act, it includes practical and useful guidance which will be adaptable to many contexts. It deals with workplace accessibility, communication, Internet accessibility, recruitment of disabled people, budgeting for inclusion, and more. The "budgeting for inclusion" section provides an innovative strategy for ensuring that your organisation has the funds it needs to accommodate people with disabilities in both offices and the projects the organisation supports
