Strengthening programme and policy implementation to meet the needs of young disabled people in East Africa

This report outlines key learning and discussion points from a disability workshop held in Tanzania involving ICT's East African partners from Uganda, Tanzania and Kenya, and a variety of DPOs representing different impairments. The aim of the workshop was to improve understanding and knowledge of participants on issues of disability and exclusion. There was a particular focus on learning practical strategies and tools which would be put into practice to make programmes more inclusive and accessible. This report is useful for practitioners working with young people with disability and includes presentations from a Disabled Peoples’ Organisations and Advocacy Plans.

After 20 years of displacement and war in northern Uganda, this research report presents information about the situation of women who acquired their disabilities due to the war or who already had disabilities before the war. The report presents interviews from women with disabilities, their family members, international agencies and NGOs, and analyses their responses given the context that Uganda is a signatory to international treaties, such as the CRPD. The report concludes by making recommendations to the government of Uganda

This report of a study completed by the ILO in Malawi, South Africa and Zambia, examines access for persons with disabilities to acquire training and obtain employment. The study finds that if given opportunities to learn new skills, persons with disabilities are equally as likely to contribute to society and the overall economy as non-disabled persons. Recommendations are provided for government and non-government organisations. This report would be useful for governments, NGOs and practitioners interested in strategies for skills acquisition and work for persons with disabilities in southern Africa

This is a report of a study of faith-based organisations in sub-Sahara, with a focus on their activities of medicine supply and distribution. Faith-based drug supply organisations (DSOs) play a crucial role in facilitating access to medicines, and complement government efforts, particularly in rural and remote areas. The study found that DSOs generally perform well, and operate in a transparent and cost-effective way. In the countries considered in this study, DSOs serve an average of 43% of the population. Weaknesses are also highlighted, including lack of quality assurance, rational use of medicines policies and business plans

This book is the result of the Evaluating Capacity Development (ECD) Project, begun by ISNAR in January 2000, which aimed to improve capacity development efforts in research and development organizations through the use of evaluation. It explains how the project used an action-learning approach, bringing together people from various countries and different types of organisations. Six evaluation studies were conducted over the course of three years: exploring capacity development in a rural development NGO in Bangladesh; towards strategic management in a Cuban agricultural research institute; understanding capacity development in a plant genetic resources centre in Ghana; assessing organisational change in an agricultural faculty in Nicaragua; strengthening participatory research capacities in a Philippines root crops research centre; and expanding capacities in a rural development institute in Vietnam. Chapter 1 provides background reading on the ECD project that gave rise to the book. Chapter 2 discusses basic concepts of organisational capacity, capacity development and evaluation. Chapter 3 addresses two fundamental issues: why managers should be concerned with organisational capacity development and why they should evaluate capacity development efforts. Chapter 4 discusses issues related to the 'how' of capacity development. Chapter 5 discusses partnerships for capacity development while 6 outlines approaches and methods for evaluating organisational capacity development. Chapter 7 discusses how to utilize evaluation processes and results to advance capacity development and performance in an organisation

Developing entrepreneurship among women with disabilities in Ethiopia

This report highlights a project implemented in Ethiopia that supported entrepreneurship among women with disabilities. It highlights exploratory surveys in the city of Addis Ababa and the rural Tigray region. The project successfully promoted economic empowerment among women with disabilities and women with disabled dependants, through partnerships with local NGOs of persons with disability. Case studies are presented, as well as tables and graphs to support the successful results. This report would be useful for people interested in entrepreneurship among women with disabilities in Ethiopia
