Why do women not use antenatal services in low- and middle-Income countries? a meta-synthesis of qualitative studies

The findings suggest that there may be a misalignment between current antenatal care provision and the social and cultural context of some women in low and middle income countries

Community perceptions of pre-term labour in rural Malawi

This policy brief looks at perceptions of neonatal and infant death. Death in the first four weeks of life accounts for almost 40% of deaths in children under five years of age. The causes of neonatal death in sub-Saharan Africa, particularly the contribution of pre-term birth, are poorly documented. It is vital to understand community perceptions of ill health in pregnancy through a combination of both traditional and biomedical models of health. The Malaria Knowledge Programme (MKP) carried out a qualitative study to investigate the perceptions of women, men and health workers of pre-term labour, its causes and prevention strategies. Although ante-natal clinic attendance was recognised as one way of preventing pre-term labour, constraints to accessing these services included lack of money and poor quality services

This manual is written for midwives and doctors at the district hospital who are responsible for the care of women with complications of pregnancy, childbirth or the immediate postpartum period including immediate problems of the newborn. The emphasis of the manual is on rapid assessment and decision making. The clinical action steps are based on clinical assessment with limited reliance on laboratory or other tests and most are possible in a variety of clinical settings (eg district hospital or health centre). The manual is arranged by symptoms (eg vaginal bleeding in early pregnancy). Because this symptom-based approach is different than most medical texts which are arranged by disease, a corresponding diagnosis table is provided. Links have been used extensively to facilitate navigation between symptoms and diagnosis. Cross-cutting issues like malaria and pregnancy are easy to locate through the index

This manual is part of a set of training tools (which includes a teacher's guide, a student's manual and policy guidelines), which have been produced to build the capacity of health personnel to prevent and to manage the health complications of FGM. They aim to bring FGM into mainstream education for health professionals will increase the pressure for the elimination of the practice. The teacher's manual contains four modules. The first module gives an introductory overview of the problem, considering cultural, ethical and human right implications of the practice. Module 2 looks at ways of involving the communities, and policy makers, in the prevention of FGM. Module 3 explains how to provide support, both medical and psychological, to girls and women with FGM complications. Module 4 looks at the implications of FGM during pregnancy, labour, delivery and post-partum period and at ways to manage complications. This is a useful tool for nursery and midwifery teachers, for community and health workers, and for those willing to raise awareness around the issue of female genital mutilation
