Life skills education for HIV prevention : a critical analysis

Challenges conventional wisdom that teaching life skills to young people would reduce HIV infection. The paper suggests that: there is disagreement about the definition of life skills; the introduction of life skills in the curriculum often creates problems, particularly in the schools of poorer countries; and that life skills are action-oriented, and may be alien to cultural contexts where people, especially the youth, are not encouraged to choose. While the paper does not intend to undermine the importance of life skills-based education in HIV contexts, its cautious and critical analysis may provide a useful tool for the improvement of related initiatives

This concise article critically reviews the concept of behaviour change as it has been applied to individual behaviour in relation to HIV/AIDS. It notes the limits of cognitive approaches to behaviour change when applied within complex contexts and variations of risk to HIV infection. With regard to communication there is a need to move beyond top-down approaches and to incorporate horizontal and participatory approaches. These include recognising and resourcing the role of civil society responses to HIV/AIDS

This paper explores how culture can be used in various forms (theatre, music, dance, traditional medicine, and more) as a means to communicate and encourage behavior change for HIV/AIDS prevention. It highlights theater for development and collaboration with traditional healers as viable alternatives to more conventional communication and behavior change models. It presents several case studies, good practices from the field, and lessons learned. The authors' understanding of a cultural approach to HIV/AIDS prevention means understanding and using a community's cultural references as a framework for the design and implementation of prevention policies and programmes. Programmes that have employed this approach are characterized by their participatory approach that fosters community ownership and in turn, can result in both greater efficacy and sustainability within the community

This study aimed to identify cultural issues relevant to HIV and AIDS prevention and care in Mozambique; assess how organisations account for and use cultural resources in their work; assess how socio-cultural factors shape young people's behaviour relative to their sexual health and HIV and AIDS. It involved a literature review, interviews and questionnaires for NGOs and governmental organisations, and a series of case studies, which are documented in the second part of this report

This handbook is based on a UNESCO project on cultural approaches to HIV and AIDS, which focuses on culture as the core element in ensuring relevance, efficiency and sustainability of prevention and care policies and projects. The handbook is intended to be an instrument for taking a cultural approach to HIV/AIDS in the India. It presents a set of methodological and learning approaches to be implemented in planning and training activities. It also presents a series of case studies demonstrating the approach in projects targetting settled and migrant communities in Delhi, female sex workers, men who have sex with men, street children, and drug users. It concludes with lessons learned and recommendations
