Provides guidance and a basis for dialogue for DFID on reducing mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) of HIV. Provides a detailed technical briefing and focuses on systems that need to be in place for effective MTCT prevention. Also identifies knowledge gaps where further research is required. Acknowledges that MTCT prevention is difficult to introduce in many countries because of weak health systems and high costs, but looks ahead to a time in the future when improved health systems will be able to support effective and efficient MTCT prevention
