Leaving no-one behind: using assistive technology to enhance community living for people with intellectual disability

The transformation of community care for people with intellectual disabilities (ID) through enhanced access to assistive technology (AT) is discussed. The problems associated with lack of access to AT and the extent to which these occur are reported. Issues in lack of AT provision, including lack of global standards, are discussed. A call to action is made with reference to the appropriate parts of CRPD.

Libraries, literacy and poverty reduction : a key to African development

This research paper explores the potential for libraries to empower communities and fight poverty in Africa, through promoting literacy and providing access to relevant information. The author outlines the challenges that libraries and information centres in Africa face; and the potential that linkages with local and international partners could bring. Case studies illustrate how library networks in three countries address the challenges and serve their communities. Recommendations for library networks highlight the need for skilled personnel, partnerships, a remit to create and share local content, appropriate use of technology, and better and more responsive monitoring and evaluation. Recommendations for governments and donor agencies include creating national information policies, filling a 'coordinating' role in the information environment, investing in literacy, and expanding public library networks

Virtual information on health emergencies and disasters for South America

This brief article reports on Peru's Virtual Disaster Library, which focuses on disasters in South America. The library is powered by two databases: DESAS and INFOR. DESAS provides access to full-text documents, bibliographic references for in-person consultations, courses and events related to natural, manmade and social disasters. The INFOR database keeps up-to-date information on events throughout Peru using a simple spreadsheet on the web to consolidate reports and provide a quick preliminary analysis.
