Pacific regional consultation – IASC guidelines on inclusion of persons with disabilities in humanitarian action

The Pacific Disability Forum (PDF), in partnership with the Inter-Agency Standing Committee (IASC) Task Team on Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities in Humanitarian Action and the International Disability Alliance (co-chair of the Task Team), held a regional multi-stakeholder consultation for the Pacific in Nadi, Fiji from 24 – 25 January 2018.

The workshop was the first in a series of regional consultations which will support the development of the IASC Guidelines on Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities in Humanitarian Action (“the Guidelines”). 

The Guidelines will assist humanitarian actors, governments, affected communities and organizations of persons with disabilities to coordinate, plan, implement, monitor and evaluate essential actions that foster the effectiveness, appropriateness and efficiency of humanitarian action, resulting in the full and effective participation and inclusion of persons with disabilities and changing practice across all sectors and in all phases of humanitarian action.

This short guide aims to guide non-governmental organisations (NGOs) through a four-step analysis of capacity. The WHO global disability action plan 2014-2021 is a significant step towards achieving health and well-being and human rights for people with disabilities. The action plan was endorsed by WHO Member States in 2014 and calls for them to remove barriers and improve access to health services and programmes; strengthen and extend rehabilitation, assistive devices and support services, and community-based rehabilitation; and enhance collection of relevant and internationally comparable data on disability, and research on disability and related services. Achieving the objectives of the action plan better enables people with disabilities to fulfil their aspirations in all aspects of life.

This site presents maps of malaria risk and endemicity (the presence of malaria) in Africa, drawing on published and unpublished data, and through spatial modelling of malaria distribution, seasonality and endemicity. Many factors, especially endemicity, affect the choice of control methods. In the absence of such data it is impossible to rationalize the allocation of limited resources for malaria control. This site presents an opportunity to rethink endemicity and how we may map malaria risk in order to better support planning and programming of malaria control

This guide aims to provide reproductive and sexual health programme planners, managers and providers with the information necessary to integrate voluntary counselling and testing (VCT) for HIV/AIDS within their services. In particular it considers integration within the context of family planning (FP) service provision. FP and VCT provision have similar aims of reaching sexually active people and promoting safe and healthy sexuality. FP settings therefore offer specific opportunities for reaching women with VCT. This guide looks at the continuum of possibilities available for integrating VCT. It is divided into 5 sections. Section 1 provides an introduction to VCT; section 2 details an assessment process for use when considering how to integrate VCT services; section 3 describes factors to consider when planning the integrated service; section 4 covers specific implementation issues; and section 5 focuses on monitoring and evaluation.
