Challenges conventional wisdom that teaching life skills to young people would reduce HIV infection. The paper suggests that: there is disagreement about the definition of life skills; the introduction of life skills in the curriculum often creates problems, particularly in the schools of poorer countries; and that life skills are action-oriented, and may be alien to cultural contexts where people, especially the youth, are not encouraged to choose. While the paper does not intend to undermine the importance of life skills-based education in HIV contexts, its cautious and critical analysis may provide a useful tool for the improvement of related initiatives

Th is publication outlines the rationale and strategy behind the UNPD Community Capacity Enhancement (CCE) programme and provides a guide for its implementation. The programme is an integral part of UNDP's Leadership for Results programme and is based on a methodology known as Community Conversations. The CCE programme is aimed at dealing with the underlying causes of HIV/AIDS, be they power relations, gender issues, stigma or discrimination. Most community methodologies rightly focus on awareness-raising and discussion; CCE focuses heavily on interactive dialogue on the epidemic's deeper causes and, through a facilitated process, community decision-making and action. The note also contains implementation guidelines and describes key steps in facilitating Community Conversations

This study explores the sexual and reproductive health needs and experiences of people with disabilities, as well as perceptions about HIV and AIDS and disability. The purpose is to address the accessibility of health communication for people with different impairments. This study would be useful for anyone with an interest in HIV and AIDS and disability

"The aim of this study was to explore whether disabled and non-disabled young adults in Swaziland have similar perceptions of HIV/AIDS similarly. A qualitative study using focus-group discussions was conducted. Four focus groups were conducted with a total of 56 non-disabled adults (aged 16-29 years) and four focus groups were conducted with a total of 32 adults with either a physical or hearing disability (aged 18-32 years). The focus-group schedule explored knowledge about HIV/AIDS, personal risk and experiences of health-seeking practices. Information and awareness about HIV/AIDS was good in both rural and urban areas among the non-disabled participants, who obtained their information from a wide range of sources. In contrast, participants with disability, who obtained information about HIV/AIDS from a limited range of sources, lacked knowledge about HIV/AIDS and were misinformed about modes of transmission...Further research is necessary to enable HIV/AIDS programmes to address the specific needs of people with disabilities"
