This report presents the findings of a desk study that provided an overview of the current state of disability and ageing issues in WASH, from the perspective of the WASH sector. Both disabled and older people were looked at together, because many frail older people, although they may reject the label ‘disabled’, experience impairments that limit their daily activities, which result in them facing similar kinds of barriers to accessing WASH

What do older people need in emergencies?|The experience in the Philippines after typhoon Ketsana

This report presents a study on the experiences of older people in 5 rural and urban communities of the Philippines following Typhoon Ketsana. The research methods included key informant interviews (KII), focus group discussions (FGD) and a review of secondary materials. The results provide a summary of older people’s needs and problems on the following issues: basic food needs, shelter (including evacuation), water supply, health, clothing, household articles, bedding and livelihood activities. It is recommended that it is critical to work with the older people and their community organisations in identifying ways and means to address their concerns during disaster and recovery situations

Disability trends and determinants in older ages in Asian countries

This presentation presents research about disability trends and determinants in older ages in Asian countries. The author compares the prevalence of functional barriers of disability including the areas of activities of daily living, instrumental activities of daily living and physical functioning activities. Comparing trends between 1992 and 2002, the author reports that there has been an increase for ageing people and highlight age, gender, socioeconomic status, physical and cognitive health, and psychosocial factors are crucial for undertaking further research in understanding aging and disability
