There is growing awareness and international commitment to improving sexual and reproductive health for persons with intellectual disabilities. Despite this, people with intellectual disabilities continue to face stigma and have limited access to sexual health education and information. This qualitative phenomenological study uses data from 10 interviews to describe what it means to teach sexual and reproductive health and rights to students with intellectual disabilities at special-needs schools in southern Sweden. The meaning of teachers’ experience is described through their efforts to ‘accept the challenge to coach special-needs students into adulthood’. Findings show that sexual and reproductive health in special-needs schools covers a broad range of topics and that the teacher must adapt to students’ shifting needs. They also reveal that teachers are motivated and have access to the necessary resources to teach sexual and reproductive health but feel they lack the skills to address students’ particular sexual health issues, including questions of culture and religion. Schools are the main source of sexual health information in Sweden and therefore play a crucial role in providing equal education and promoting public health.

"WASH in Schools aims to support the provision of safe drinking water and improved sanitation facilities, and promotes lifelong health for children and their families...This guidebook is a resource for those involved in teaching and working with children in emergency preparedness, during an emergency and throughout the recovery period. It provides simple strategies for use and adaptation with all children and families to ensure a smooth and healthy transition to a healthy and accessible learning environment...The guidebook provides the information needed to ensure that every child knows about water, sanitation and hygiene. It is not a technical book about installing taps and building toilets. Instead it provides guidance on safe WASH behaviours that help children, families and teachers stay healthy and avoid life threatening diseases. Every emergency and child-friendly space or school is different, so the suggestions and ideas provided should be adapted to suit the local situation"

The sound of silence : difficulties in communicating on HIV/AIDS in schools

BOLER, Tania
et al
2003

Expand view

This report describes the difficulties in communicating on HIV/AIDS in schools. It includes experiences from India and Kenya, and reports the findings of a survey carried out by ActionAid researchers in both countries in 2002. The research examines parental demand for HIV/AIDS education. It then explroes teh role that schools have in meeting this demand and other sources that young people might use to learn about HIV and AIDS. The final section places HIV/AIDS communication in the wider context of a crisis in education in resource-poor settings, and highlights some of the barriers or silences in communication around HIV/AIDS. Among its conclusions is the suggestion that HIV/AIDS education be placed in the context of the community

The latter is analysed with respect to the demand and supply of education (growing number of orphans, declining number of teachers, and associated issues); the impact of HIV on the content, process, organisation, and role of education, and on the planning and management of education. Concludes that education must be radically re-examined in the light of the HIV pandemic, and its role in the prevention of the disease

HIV stress in primary school teachers in Zambia

BAGGALEY, Rachel
et al

Expand view

A study was made of stress factors experienced by primary school teachers in Zambia after they had attended a course on stress management and counselling skills. Their pupils were significantly affected by poverty, death and illness of parents, fellow-pupils and teachers, teenage sex and pregnancy, violence in the home and, among girls, low self-esteem. The HIV epidemic had a major bearing on these factors, and there were wide-ranging effects on the teachers' own lives. Despite the training they had been given, many teachers felt that they could not adequately counsel their pupils on these matters. The teachers were in need of continuing support and training to enable them to cope with this aspect of their work

For sensitizing intermediaries on sexual rights of young people with learning disabilities

“This manual has been developed for organizations who wish to educate and sensitize staff, teachers and carers about the sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) of young people with mild to moderate learning disabilities. Although it mainly focuses on intermediaries that are staff in an institution for young people with learning disabilities, it may well also be appropriate as a programme for the parents and family of young people with learning disabilities. The manual provides a menu of exercises that can be used to sensitize intermediaries on how to create a protective environment for young people with learning disabilities to prevent sexual abuse and violence”
