This follow-up publication is intended to be read in conjunction with 'HIV/AIDS prevention and care for especially vulnerable young people: a framework for action', which set out five core principles underpinning effective HIV/AIDS prevention programming with young people: putting the young person first; promoting meaningful participation; a commitment to rights; promoting gender equity; and tackling risk and vulnerability. It outlines five case studies. Each case study describes how these principles have been put into action, through innovative approaches to working with young people who are homeless, using drugs, selling sex or living in deprived communities. Case studies come from Argentina, India, Iran, Kenya and Nigeria. This is a useful resource for policy-makers, practitioners and researchers working to promote young people's sexual health in resource-constrained settings

Section 1 looks at principles of youth participation in decision making and discusses some of the obstacles preventing sustainable participatory processes and practices. To handle life's challenges : a tracer study of Servol's Adolescent Development Programme in Trinidad

Can a 14-week programme for adolescents have a lasting effect on their lives? This tracer study shows that, 10 years on, 40 Trinidadians in their 20s are doing their best to meet life's challenges. These young people, many from backgrounds of disadvantage and abuse, took part in the Adolescent Development Programme run by SERVOL. The study compares their outcomes with a similar group of people and, while the differences between the groups are small, there are some distinctions. The former trainees themselves believe that the course enhanced their parenting skills and had a positive impact on their lives. The report also shares learning from the project

Describes the development of a youth group in Thailand that engages in HIV/AIDS education through puppet shows, stage plays, youth training and workshops, youth camps, village broadcasting, small group discussions, sports and competitions, and radio shows. In all activities, they integrate information about HIV/AIDS and emphasize the participation of the community throughout the process. Some useful lessons are included in the final section, 'Turning from a risk group to a responsible body'. The report was prepared by the youth themselves, and was translated and published by UNDP-SEAHIV

Youth telephone hotlines were established by the Asociación Pro-Bienestar de la Familia de Guatemala (APROFAM) in Guatemala and the Asociación Pro-Bienestar de la Familia Colombiana (PROFAMILIA) in Colombia as a means of providing an anonymous and free point of first contact for adolescents in need of sexual and reproductive health information. The goal of APROFAM's hotline was to improve adolescents' sexual, reproductive and mental health by offering emergency counselling and referrals. PROFAMILIA's goal was to offer counselling and referrals to those adolescents with questions or problems related to sexual and reproductive health but without direct access to services
