This follow-up publication is intended to be read in conjunction with 'HIV/AIDS prevention and care for especially vulnerable young people: a framework for action', which set out five core principles underpinning effective HIV/AIDS prevention programming with young people: putting the young person first; promoting meaningful participation; a commitment to rights; promoting gender equity; and tackling risk and vulnerability. It outlines five case studies. Each case study describes how these principles have been put into action, through innovative approaches to working with young people who are homeless, using drugs, selling sex or living in deprived communities. Case studies come from Argentina, India, Iran, Kenya and Nigeria. This is a useful resource for policy-makers, practitioners and researchers working to promote young people's sexual health in resource-constrained settings

This book deals with the need to adapt mainstream development and humanitarian work to address the problem of HIV and AIDS. It explains the concept of 'mainstreaming' HIV/AIDS in simple language, with practical guidelines for applying the approach in a wide range of sectors. The author's previous book, 'AIDS on the Agenda: Adapting Development and Humanitarian Programmes to Meet the Challenge of HIV/AIDS', made the case for mainstreaming, using both theoretical discussion and experiences from the field. She has now adapted that work to produce this shorter and simpler book, to make the idea and practice of mainstreaming more accessible to those who actually do development and humanitarian work, as well as those who manage and fund it

Since 2000, the International HIV/AIDS Alliance and its country office in India has worked in three states in India to establish and support three Lead Partners, including Vasavya Mahila Mandali (VMM), and 37 implementing NGOs to carry out a pioneering programme of home and community-based care and support for children affected by HIV/AIDS and their families. In this report, VMM draws on its work to identify gaps in existing services and propose effective initiatives, policies and examples of good practice for dealing with the issues that children face when they are affected by HIV/AIDS

Double exposure : disability and HIV/AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa

This paper argues that the situation regarding disability and HIV/AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa is in need of more attention. People with various disabilities are more exposed to contracting HIV/AIDS: firstly, because they are deprived of their right to HIV/AIDS information; secondly, because disabled women in particular are sexually exploited due to society’s paralleling of disability with worthlessness. Fundamentally, people with disabilities are further exposed to HIV/AIDS because they are socially excluded. The paper uses the social exclusion framework to argue that there is a need to view social exclusion, disability and HIV/AIDS as part of a relationship. It reviews the debate of definitions of disability and presents various scenarios that illustrate the overlap between poverty and disability, the inaccessibility of HIV/AIDS information, education and communication (IEC) and attitudinal discrimination towards disabled people. The response of some key donors, governments and non-governmental organisations to the situation regarding disability and HIV/AIDS is also reviewed. The paper concludes that the social exclusion framework is useful in order to understand the conceptualisation of disability and that this conceptualisation must be adapted to the social model, which removes the onus of disability from the person to society

Community care, change and hope : local responses to HIV in Zambia

This case study documents a successful model for facilitating a strong community response to HIV and AIDS. The Salvation Army Change Programme in Ndola and Choma Districts in Zambia illustrates the facilitation process stimulating an appropriate local response to HIV and AIDS and essential component of human capacity development. The model builds on local strengths and resources, stimulating ordinary people to address the barriers that prevent them from using HIV and AIDS information and services to prevent new infections, compassionately care for those who are infected and mitigate the effects of the epidemic on families and the community. Only by addressing personal risk, stigma and the potential for personal and societal change will the demand for and use of voluntary counselling and testing, prevention of mother to child transmission and antiretroviral therapy services increase

This report gives a general overview of HIV/AIDS and disability. It reports on the group discussions that took place during the conference on different types of disability and HIV/AIDS, demonstrating that the lack of access to information is a specific problem especially for visually impaired and hearing-impaired people. Different aspects of HIV/AIDS and disability were explored during the conference, including the production of HIV/AIDS materials and the inclusion or exclusion of disabled people within this process; HIV/AIDS and the workplace; minorities; gender issues; education; and organisations of disabled people. Discussions revealed that disabled people see HIV/AIDS not as a topic in itself, but as part of the bigger problem of marginalisation in general. The main recommendations arising from the conference were to establish a task force in the NFPDN to work on a programme on HIV/AIDS and disability, to network and cooperate with mainstream HIV/AIDS organisations, and to establish baseline data on HIV/AIDS

This is a rare case study of a pilot project to address the specific needs of children under 5 affected by HIV/AIDS who are typically ignored at the programming level and often miss the benefits of general HIV/AIDS interventions. The project operated in Western Kenya and the study contains evidence of the work carried out, a lessons learned catalogue of the processes and tools developed, and a set of suggestions of how the tools and processes might be adapted to other groups in other contexts. It is an excellent example of a community based response to the needs of very young children and addresses the key challenges faced in attempting to do so

This paper explores how culture can be used in various forms (theatre, music, dance, traditional medicine, and more) as a means to communicate and encourage behavior change for HIV/AIDS prevention. It highlights theater for development and collaboration with traditional healers as viable alternatives to more conventional communication and behavior change models. It presents several case studies, good practices from the field, and lessons learned. The authors' understanding of a cultural approach to HIV/AIDS prevention means understanding and using a community's cultural references as a framework for the design and implementation of prevention policies and programmes. Programmes that have employed this approach are characterized by their participatory approach that fosters community ownership and in turn, can result in both greater efficacy and sustainability within the community
