This publication on Disability, Livelihood and Poverty in Asia and the Pacific is an executive summary that draws from a wider body of primary and secondary research undertaken by the ESCAP research team. It considers both the quantitative and qualitative dimensions which shape the livelihood experiences of persons with disabilities. The primary research is derived from collaboration between ESCAP and its national research partners: disabled people’s organizations (DPOs) and organizations for the empowerment of persons with disabilities. The research included a survey with 1768 respondents (people with disabilities) in eight countires (Fiji, India, Japan, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, Philippines, Republic of Korea and Thailand

Speaking up : Muslim views on HIV & AIDS

This publication presents the findings of research which covered over 3,500 respondents from Muslim communities across Thailand, Cambodia, Bangladesh and India (West Bengal). It is divided into 3 parts: the first part details the demographics of the study population and methodology of the research. The second part provides detailed information on the content and results of the research survey: highlighting the widespread prevalence of misconceptions about HIV transmission, and the poor understanding of key risk behaviours amongst Muslim communities; the views and opinions of Muslim communities about HIV & AIDS and the prevailing stigma and discrimination associated with HIV & AIDS and people living with HIV & AIDS; and various attitudes towards Islam and condom use, and notions of gendered responsibilities in preventing HIV & AIDS. The third part summarises the overall key findings, along with important findings in each surveyed country, and provides recommendations for future interventions based on this

It begins with country specific case studies to review the responses to HIV & AIDS already implemented in Bangladesh, Thailand and South Africa. The second part of this publication explores key issues in HIV & AIDS - namely human rights and gender issues and the reasons why such issues need to be incorporated into programmes to address HIV & AIDS. The final part outlines the value of Islamic teachings that can be drawn upon in HIV & AIDS prevention and care, and the roles that should be played by government, religious leaders, and Muslim NGO activists in confronting the challenges presented by HIV & AIDS

"Violence against women by an intimate partner is a major contributor to the ill-health of women. This study analyses data from 10 countries and sheds new light on the prevalence of violence against women in countries where few data were previously available. It also uncovers the forms and patterns of this violence across different countries and cultures, documenting the consequences of violence for women’s health. This information has important implications for prevention, care and mitigation... The high rates documented by the Study of sexual abuse experienced by girls and women are of great concern, especially in light of the HIV epidemic. Greater public awareness of this problem is needed and a strong public health response that focuses on preventing such violence from occurring in the first place...This study will help national authorities to design policies and programmes that begin to deal with the problem"

Disability issues in East Asia : review and ways forward

This paper provides "the World Bank’s East Asia and Pacific region with information and insights necessary for improving a focus on disability in its activities. There are two major parts to this paper. The first part reviews disability related issues in the region by describing (1) the prevalence of disability and related issues; (2) major issues and challenges confronting persons with disabilities; and (3) good practices, innovative approaches, and effective organizations in the region working to meet the needs of persons with disabilities. The second part reviews the Bank’s regional level activities through examining project portfolios and AAA products, as well as through interviews with Sector managers and staff members. Based on this review, the paper recommends ways to include disability issues at the regional and sector levels"
