TASO aims to contribute to the reduction of HIV incidence and promote the quality of life of people living with HIV/AIDS in Uganda..Its objectives are to offer counselling to PLAs and their families; to train counsellors for TASO and other organisations; to build and supprot community-based efforts to respond ot the HIV epidemic; to complement government medical services in the treatment of opportunistic infections; to minimise illnesses associated HIV infection; and to promote positive attitudes toards PLAs. Their resource centre is open to the public

Together Against AIDS Positive Association (TAAPA)

This is a local organisation, founded and run by PLWHA and working in the Wakiso District. Its activities include mobilization and sensitization of PLWHA, providing positive-living skills to PLWHA, prevention of mother-to-child transmission, training for the general community, providing skills to create and manage income-generating activities, support for primary school orphans and vulnerable children (school fees and scholastic materials), education on nutrition and palliative care, training community on “memory projects” and paralegal issues (rights and obligations)

The History of the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development is derived from its mandate as of the 1995 Constitution of the Republic of Uganda, Chapters 4 and 16 which is to: “empower communities to harness their potential through skills development, Labour productivity and cultural growth.” The constitution advocates for protection and promotion of fundamental rights of the poor and other vulnerable groups as well as institutions of traditional or cultural leaders.

 

The Ministry’s mandate is to empower communities to harness their potential through cultural growth, skills development and Labour productivity for sustainable and gender responsive development.

The mission is promotion of gender equality, labour administration, social protection and transformation of communities.

The vision is a better standard of living, equality and social cohesion,  especially for poor and vulnerable groups in Uganda.

 

The Sector Strategic Objectives are:

-To empower communities to appreciate, access, participate in, manage and demand accountability in public and community based initiatives;

-To protect vulnerable persons from deprivation and livelihood risks;

-To create an enabling environment for increasing employment opportunities and productivity for Improved livelihoods and social security for all, especially the poor and vulnerable;

-To ensure that issues of inequality and exclusion in access to services across all sectors and at all levels are addressed; and

-To improve performance of SD institutions to coordinate and implement the SDIP at various levels.

National Community of Women Living with HIV/AIDS in Uganda (NACWOLA)

NACWOLA's aim is to improve the quality of life of women living with HIV/AIDS. It objectives are to offer psycho-social support to AIDS affected children; to economically empower HIV positive women to reduce their vulnerability and dependency; to advocate for women living HIV through the publication of newsletters, drama and community sensitisation; to network with other NGOs, PLWA groups nationally and internationally. A core aspect of NACWOLA's work is the Memory Project. This involves training, counselling, running clinics for women, and carrying out activities to bridge the communicaiton gap between women and their children. The NACWOLA resource centre is open to the public
