Healthworkers in low income countries do not always have access to up-to-date health and medical information to help them diagnose and treat their patients. HBI offers a practical, highly-effective response to a lack of access to information by sourcing, producing and distributing practical and accessible health information designed for use where resources are limited. Materials are clearly written, well-illustrated and relevant to the conditions in which many health workers operate – with limited access to electricity and reliable internet connections, sophisticated equipment or drugs for treatment. Health Books International’s vision is a world where everyone has access to good quality healthcare with a mission to improve health by providing healthcare and medical information designed for use in developing countries on a not-for-profit basis.

Originally called Teaching-aids at Low Cost (TALC), HBI was founded in 1965 by Professor David Morley CBE MD FCRP, in response to requests from overseas students for teaching books and equipment to use in their own countries.

In 2019, Practical Action Publishing acquired Health Books International.

The Disability Press was a non profit making publisher which sought to provide an independent and alternative outlet for work in the general area of Disability Studies.

Using previously generated research funding The Disability Press was set up by Colin Barnes in the School of Sociology and Social Policy in 1995. It followed several unsuccessful attempts to get an edited collection of eleven papers from a conference covering the complex relationship between Disability Studies and the Sociology of Health and Illness, published by other publishers.

From the outset the main aim of the Disability Press was to reach as wide and audience as possible. All prospective authors were asked to avoid, wherever possible, unnecessary academic jargon and terminology and all publications were produced in a variety of formats.

Items published between 1995 and 2000 were available in either standard format, a large print version or a Braille copy produced by The Royal Nation Institute for Blind’s (RNIB) transcription unit, then housed in the University’s Equalities Unit. Subsequent publications were all available in standard format or CD on request.

The Disability Press ceased to operate in 2013

Our vision

Our vision is a society where disabled women, men, boys and girls – and the most vulnerable and marginalized people – have equal social, economic and civil rights.

Inclusion is at the heart of everything we do, so disabled and vulnerable people can engage and lead initiatives for change and equality of opportunity.

We focus on the needs of vulnerable children and adults, and carers of disabled people, including disabilities that are not so obvious such as deafness and mental illness.

Our approach to partnership is responsive and flexible: we work with our partners to translate ideas into tangible and effective programmes.

Partnerships

Working in partnership is our dedicated priority. Run by and for disabled people, our local partners are best placed to understand their needs and challenges.

We play an essential practical role for our partners in countries such as Ethiopia, Mozambique and Nepal: supporting, developing and realizing projects, raising funds, building capacities in project and financial management, ensuring that objectives are met, and facilitating south-to-south exchanges of experience.

As they work towards a sustainable future, many of our partner organizations have used our partnership as a springboard to funding, independence and success
